The first is drift you did not know about. An instrument reads within tolerance until it quietly does not, and the first indication is a batch investigation, an out-of-specification result, or an auditor asking why a measurement point has no current certificate.

The second is the calibration itself. An instrument goes out, and the analysis waits — with no fixed date back. For a laboratory releasing product, an open-ended turnaround is a week or more of either held stock or results nobody can stand behind.
